Nothing says big like Jupiter. The largest of the planets, it has been associated with all kinds of thunder gods from Zeus and Jupiter to Marduk the thunder king of Babylon. Jupiter rules over and external expansion and an internal broadening. Jupiter is about broad mindedness and broadened horizons. When Jupiter is out of alignment our vision suffers, our minds are closed and expectant and we seem hapless and luckless.
For this reason the characteristics ruled by Jupiter may be easily mistaken for things that happen to us and not part of our internal realm. I will tell you now, nothing could be further than the truth. Jupiter is about how we look upon and situate ourselves to opportunity. A closed mind is in essence closing ourselves off to possibility.
Benjamin Franklin said “find a penny pick it up all the day you'll have good luck, find a penny let it lay bad luck will come your way.” This saying has oft been mistaken for a saying about an omen of chance, in much the same way Jupiter is misunderstood. Here's the deal, when we are confronted by opportunity and we fail to recognize it or decide to not take advantage of it, we may easily say that bad luck has descended upon us.
This is particularly easily done when it is our mindset that hides the opportunities to us. Jupiter corresponds exactly to this: How open and positive you are. How willing you are to look forward rather than dwelling on the past. In the Tarot deck, the card most associated to Jupiter is the wheel of fortune, often depicting people on the wheel, one climbing up, one sitting a king on top and one falling down. This has been interpreted by some as the fickleness of fate. But there is a secret to be teased out of this. The great wheel is life itself, and moves ever forward, when we look and move forward eagerly reaching for new possibility then we move in alignment to the wheel, and may rise, and be on top, when we stop, look back or try to remain, expansion moves past us, and we feel as though fate has sneered at us.
In balance with Jupiter our minds are forever opening. Further more, our hopes are ever expanding, our roads are forever reaching for the horizon, and our bounty and charity are forever increasing, and we are forever in a state of renewal and adaptation. What a biologist might call bio-stasis but the rest of us would call being alive.
