This is the First part of an ongoing article about the planet Mercury and how to use its energy in alliance with other planetary energies to create positive change in life and the world. This article is the first in a series of Articles on the Classical planets.
Mercury was the messenger of the gods, a thief a cad and con artist. All of this you could find in an intro astrology book, or most probably a quick scan of Wikipedia. To really begin the process of understanding this body I want to delve in and discuss the actual function of the energy mercury represents in our person-hoods and in our lives.
Mercury is the lord of information. What does that mean? Information is really an associative game. Mercury is how we think, and the conscious mind is simply a machine that strings together associations. In many ways this relates to what the Buddhists might call the chattering monkey.
Far from superfluous, Mercury is very useful, but lets be honest, only within the realm in which he is designed to operate. Mercury does not make decisions only discussions. Mercury delights in making things interesting, and delights in detail, when in a good groove with other planets Mercury can charge trick and appeal. That is his nature.
In Alchemy Mercury was associated with the metal of his same name. And like the metal Mercury is associated with his ability to hold 2 natures at once (like the element which is both a metal and a liquid). Mercury stitches the internal with the external. Mercury builds storyline.
BUT (and this is important) Mercury is unable to make a value judgement, or in fact a decision, because mercury simply has interest, no desire. Mercury does not motivate, except through pure curiosity.
And so the most useful understanding about mercury is to understand mercurial discipline (and no, despite what it sounds like this is not a contradiction). Here I would like to reassert that discipline is not at all what we think it to be. In terms of Mercury, discipline is simply training our thought process, our self talk and our communication in a way that reflects what we want our world to look like.
In many ways this is the first step in actively taking control over your world. This is why Mercury has been associated with the 1st card of the Tarot, the Magus. The Magus stands connecting heaven to Earth as in his own small way mercury is the first, or most apparent connection between body and spirit (when functioning in balance that is). And when in balance mercury is himself a synthesis, the synthesis of the 2 minds, what psychologists have called the left and the right brain. Mercury is left and right above and below, and in fact in many respects male and female.
Mercury is a synthesis, but not a decision. He is the voice of the Narrative, but not the story and certainly not the moral of the story.
Mercury as all other planets must function in balance with all other planets, because they are all present within our lives- and for good reason. Think of it as a whole machine that needs all its pieces in proper balance and in proper order. We begin with Mercury, because he is the thought, and it is the easiest place to intervene in terms of the planets. Change our thoughts and we begin to reset the machine. Reset the machine and we change the world. Its that simple. To this end we will follow up this article with articles on how mercury plays with others and balancing our energies between them! We then look to work our way through a series of series of articles on the classical planets!
