There are few subjects of astrology that gets quite as much casual discussion as Mercury in retrograde. In some circles a Mercury in retrograde plays the ultimate boogy-man, the proverbial devil that made us all do it, or just a gremlin in the great cosmic machine. I'm here to tell ya baby, it just ain't so!
To explain let us begin with what a retrograde is. Retrograde is a reference to how a planet appears to move through the sky from an earth-bound perspective. IE because both the earth and Mercury rotate around the sun at different speeds (Mercury faster than the Earth) every so often mercury appears to move backwards through the sky from our earthbound perspective. Mercury is not the only planet that does this. All planets do this, while the moon and the sun obviously do not.
In terms of astrology a planet when it goes retrograde indicates a certain change in the way it relates its characteristics. A planet in retrograde focuses in an introspective manner. Call it an opportunity to recalibrate the internal world.
When Mercury, which rules over thought patterns, information and communication goes retrograde we have a natural tendency and need for introspection and self examination. This of course is an incredibly good thing. The only issue is that when we are naturally tending toward intently focusing inside and insist on trying to focus our attentions on doing things outward we will encounter errors. Its like driving while reading a comic book.
The trick? When we are called to introspection it is good to give ourselves the space to introspect, to relax and give ourselves the important room we need to calibrate our insides to our own will and best intent.
As we speak Mercury is in retrograde in Leo. It is now that we examine our own persona. This is serious spiritual work of finding the core of our joy, finding out who we see ourselves as. What the idea of play means to us, and just the way we choose to walk in the sun (proverbially speaking). So yes Mercury is in retrograde. But seriously no need to blame it, just start doing the good work.
