Hygeia: Taking Care and Nurturing Wellness

Hygeia is the 5th in a series on asteroids.  Traditionally viewed as minor and feminine, they highlight issues that can be very important in of personal lives.

These include:
CeresVesta ,  Juno Pallas Athena

Hygeia may be the least followed followed body we have discussed so far.  Like Vesta, Juno and Pallas Athena Hygeia is part of that asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.  Hygeia is not often discussed in astrology, and when discussed, she is often discussed in a rather deterministic, reactive way.

Most of the referrences to Hygeia involve a discussion of how when ill aspected she may indicate ill health, disease.  Rebel Astrology, being in nature antideterministic seeks a astrologically valid, but different view.  When ill affected Hygeia may indicate ill health, but why? Let's begin with what precisely Hygeia the godess was set over.

Hygeia was a godess of medicine, but a very specific kind of medicine.  Her siblings were Pankeio (translated literally as Cure-all) and Iaso (translated as Remedy).  Hygeia was none of these, she was set over health maintenance.

Here-in lies both the reason for her seeming invisiblity within the world of Astrology, and the heart of her worth!  Hygeia is about the little things we do, or should do, every day to maintain a healthy condition in mind body and spirit.  She would seem to make very little difference in and of herself until in a difficult aspect, simply because her manifestation isn't flashy, and as all too many of us are aware she is easily ignored!

However, if we pay attention to keeping our hygeia in balance and satisfied every day, we keep an unseen level of support below all other energies, that while not dramatic- or a cure, allows ongoing stregnth happiness and flexibility in all issues.  And incidentally prevents those hard aspects from getting out of control.

To find your Hygeia on Astro.com: After entering your personal birth Information choose "extended chart options"  scroll down to manual entries and put "10" in the box. For a simple natal chart everything else should be automatic and need no change.

We would then interpret each position in terms of what we know about the sign and the house, for example hygeia in Cancer might want to pay special attention to the lungs and heart (Cancer rules the chest ) and needs a lot of family time, and time at home to keep good care of themselves.  Daily and weekly rituals such as dinner at the table or a weekly trip to a specific coffee shop may also be key.

Where as someone with a hygeia in Sagitarius might require a lot less planned situations, a little bit of adventure, and travel etc.

Hygeia should feel good when being caterred to, but Hygeia is not about what feels good, as someone with a Hygeia in Cancer may also enjoy the occasional adventure or travel.  Hygeia is about our regular health maintenance needs.

I take care of myself, mind body and spirit.  In all the little ways every day, adn my energy grows, my health is wonderful and I remain capable of all the exciting challenges of my life!
